Building a Porch – Things to Consider Before You Build

Summer is right around the corner, and if you plan on spending a lot of time outside you may want to consider creating your own outdoor oasis. One way to do that is to create a screened in porch. A screened in porch will offer you and your family a nice place to enjoy the outdoors while staying safe from insects and nature’s elements.

Before you begin building your porch, there are some things that you may want to consider.

First, you need to consider how you plan to utilize your porch. Are you going to use the porch as an additional space to entertain guests for parties and holidays? Or, are you looking to create a private space for you and your family? Determining how you plan to utilize your porch will ultimately determine the size of the porch and the amount of materials needed.

It’s also important to consider when you will be using your porch. If you plan to utilize your porch during the summer, you may want to incorporate a ceiling fan or shades. If you want to use your porch in the colder, winter months you may consider adding heating elements such as heaters or fireplaces. Determining when you will use your porch will be especially important when it comes to building, screening and roofing materials.

If you would like to install lighting or electrical outlets, a licensed electrician can help with this part of the job. If you plan to run the wiring on the porch yourself, check with an electrician beforehand to make sure you are doing it correctly and safely.

And finally, you need to consider the overall design of your porch. Even if you aren’t an artist, mapping out your porch’s floor plan prior to execution will save you a lot of time. This will come in handy while working with a professional when gathering materials. If you’re having trouble putting your thoughts on paper, flip through home improvement magazines for inspiration and note the porches that you love.
