What’s the Difference? Asphalt & Architectural Shingles

Ready to replace your roof? It’s a big project that homeowners will face at one point or another. First and foremost, you’ll need to choose the shingles: 3-tab asphalt shingles or architectural style shingles. While asphalt is the most commonly used shingles, architectural shingles are gaining popularity because of their classy appearance and durability. So, let’s talk about both to see which option is best for you.

Asphalt: Many homeowners go with asphalt shingles because they are budget-friendly and hold up well to the elements. These shingles are coated with asphalt and cut into three equal-size tabs that are 12-inches wide. The “tab” is the portion of the shingle that can be seen once it’s installed. All of the shingles are identical in size, shape, and thickness so they are consistent in their appearance.

Architectural: These shingles are visually appealing and add a sophisticated appearance to your roof. Unlike asphalt shingles, they are not cut into tabs. They boast different sizes and shapes, giving each piece a multi-dimensional appearance. As a result, architectural shingles are much thicker and heavier than asphalt. They have a resistance to wind, hail, and fungal growth that asphalt does not.

When it comes to appearances, both asphalt and architectural shingles come in a variety of colors to match your unique style. Many more homeowners are selecting architectural shingles because of their impressive visual appeal. They can be manufactured in a wide range of textures and shapes that asphalt simply cannot, thus, boosting curb appeal and creating an overall upscale look.

Cost is always a factor with any home improvement project. Architectural shingles will absolutely cost more money than asphalt. But, if you have a smaller home with a simple roof structure, going with architectural shingles may be a worthwhile investment.  Asphalt, however, is used the most due to its affordability and availability. When and if roof repairs are needed, asphalt shingles are always readily available.

Speaking of repairs, architectural shingles typically have between a 30-year to a lifetime guarantee. Their thickness and multi-dimensional features give them a higher rating over asphalt, because they’ll require less in the way of repairs or replacement. Asphalt shingles are much thinner and will certainly need repairs and replacement from wind or hail damage.

If value for your money is important to you, architectural shingles will undeniably raise the value of your home. When it comes time to sell, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much value your home has retained and, in most cases, increased with the use of architectural shingles.
